Nairobi was founded around a water hole in 1899 as a supply depot for the Uganda Railway which runs from Mombasa to the eastern shores of Lake Victoria. The words for "cool waters" in Maa, the language of the Maasai, are Ewaso Nyirobi. As the supply depot grew larger and larger the township that developed became known as Nairobi.  Today, modern Nairobi is the African safari capital of the world and has evolved into one of Africa's largest and most interesting cities.
