Kitich Conservation & Social Responsibility
Because of the pristine and unexplored wilderness, Kitich Camp prefers to avoid the traditional game drives, instead encouraging guests to take walks guided by Samburu warriors.- Kitich Camp is the barrier between uncontrolled grazing and the pristine forest; its existence, and participation within the Namunyak Wildlife Community Conservancy is the only survival insurance for the mountain forest.
- Kitich Camp achieves environmental best practice combining old fashioned safari camp know-how with latest technology. It relies entirely on solar power, uses only LED lighting
- Rubbish is responsibly disposed of or recycled. Glass is separated and sold to the recycling plant ‘Central Glass’ in Nairobi. All funds are donated to the East African Women’s League to support a family planning program managed by the North Lake Branch, Naivasha.
- Kitich Camp has been awarded “Silver Level” by Ecotourism Kenya in recognition of its high level of environmental responsibility.
Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy
-
In the Matthews Mountain Range, Kitich Camp is situated in the 4,942 acre Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy established in 1995 by the local communities to promote wildlife conservation and the socio-economic development through sustainable utilization of natural resources. The conservancy is facilitated by the Northern Rangeland Trust (NRT) with the support of Tusk Trust, whose objectives include capacity building at grassroot level to empower the 13 elected community trustees to effectively manage their own conservancy, improving environmental awareness for adults and children alike, increasing security for wildlife, people and livestock in the area, protecting natural resources, resolve grazing conflicts and establishing sustainable enterprises to enable local communities to earn an income.
Revenue to the conservancy from Kitich Camp is anticipated to reach $30,000 by 2012, making Kitich a key tourism partner for Namunyak. Kitich employs 80% of its staff from the surrounding communities and pays Namunyak conservation fees collected from guests on a per person per night basis. 60% of this income is used to fund community projects, such as school bursaries, health and water projects, while 40% is used to fund annual operations costs of Namunyak.
All the names of community members who have recently benefitted from bursaries funded by Kitich Camp's fees, as well as those who have been assisted with emergency hospital bills and so on, are listed below:
