Lewa Safari Camp Conservation & Social Responsibility

• The world famous Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, founded in 1995, spans 62,000 acres and serves as a catalyst for conservation across the region. 
• Lewa Safari Camp is the only tourism property owned by Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, which reinvests all profits generated from park fees and the Camp into its community and conservation programmes. When you visit Lewa Safari Camp, you help thousands of people in the surrounding communities improve their lives at the same time as securing a stable habitat for Kenya's wildlife.
• Through the protection of endangered species, facilitation of community conservation and development, and education of neighbouring areas about the value of wildlife, Lewa has become Africa's leading model for conservation and low impact tourism.
• The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Development Programmes aim to increase social and economic benefits to the communities with whom we work. The essence of these programmes is to reduce human-wildlife conflict and increase socio-economic benefits local communities can derive from wildlife and tourism. Lewa assists these communities with education and health-care support, water and agricultural projects, as well as a women's micro-credit programme, reaching over 800 members.
• At Lewa Safari Camp, rubbish is responsibly disposed of or recycled. Glass is separated and sold to the recycling plant 'Central Glass' in Nairobi. All funds are donated to the East African Women's League to support a family planning program managed by the North Lake Branch, Naivasha.
• Lewa Safari Camp has been awarded "Bronze Level" by Ecotourism Kenya, the first step in the process of upgrading all the back of house systems to make the camp as environmentally responsible as possible.

The Lewa Education Programme

Over and above the funding that Lewa Safari Camp generates for the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy projects, we are specifically encouraging additional donor support for the Conservancy’s Lewa Education Programme. The programme supports 12 schools in the surrounding communities, providing classrooms, kitchens, teachers’ housing, a feeding programme reaching over 4,000 children, bursaries for over 500 students, assistance to 60 orphans, adult literacy catering for 300 people and conservation education running three times a week, open to students all over Kenya. 

If you would like to visit one of the schools during your safari, a $50 donation for the Lewa Education Programme will be applicable per person.  Please note that the Lewa Education Programme allocates all donations received according to current priorities as identified by them. Lewa Safaricom Marathon

“The Safaricom Marathon is regarded as one of the toughest marathons in the world…”

Last June, a team of 10 enthusiastic staff from Lewa Safari Camp entered this annual fundraising event in which over 1,000 runners from 20 countries run marathons through the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy itself.

Since the first race took place in 2000, the Lewa Marathon has raised over KES150,000,000 for community development, health, education, wildlife and conservation projects in Kenya.

To enter the Half Marathon event, teams have to raise at least KES 100,000 and in 2011, Lewa Safari Camp’s team raised well over this benchmark, KES 173,819, contributing to the ongoing efforts of the conservancy.

The Lewa Safari Camp Half Marathon team is once again running in the Safaricom Marathon. Whatever you can put forward in sponsorship of our team would be hugely appreciated - we aim to beat last year's total, and every little helps!!
